Embrace the Race
While RUNaway Moms trains on a season basis and not a race basis (meaning that your training doesn't end just because the race ended), we moms do love the motivation of a race on the horizon.  Racing is not a required part of running.  You can certainly be a respected and dedicated runner without entering one single race . . . . but you'd also be missing out!  Races are designed to be as fun as you make them.  If you approach a race by thinking that everything has to be perfect and/or that you have to beat a specific runner that pushes your buttons, then the race all becomes about stress and pressure to perform.  Ummm, that's not for us.  But if you approach a race as a fun way to get in a workout or measure your progress or get some good pictures and a tshirt and medal and beer at the end, then pick out a race and let's plan accordingly!  (Just a sidenote - I stopped at mile 17 in the Houston 2010 Marathon and walked to the side of the road to shake President George H.W. Bush's hand.  Never would've done that had I not entered a race.  Cool.)
The areas in and around The Woodlands and Houston have some GREAT races year round and there are plenty of races to pick from if you are a recreational runner.  Now all you need is a goal race.  And voila!  Here's your goal!  (And if you have another race in mind, let's work on that plan together.)
Once you finish a race, there's such a feeling of
accomplishment. Because it's just you, and you have just yourself to credit for
doing what you did. It's always a great feeling afterward, because you know you
did it all yourself.
